Our School

Bursley C.P. School is a happy, successful and popular school, situated in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire.

There are 307 children on roll, organised into eight mixed aged classes and two Reception classes. Pupils are admitted to the Reception classes as ‘rising fives’ in September each year. The teaching staff currently comprises of twelve full time staff including the Headteacher. We have a HLTA who not only assists teaching staff and supports children with their learning, but also covers staff for PPA time. There  are also several full and part-time Teaching Assistants on the staff.

The building was completed in 1959, but has been extensively modified and modernised over the past ten years. New extensions include administrative offices, medical, and resource rooms as well as a purpose built ICT/Library suite.

The school grounds consist of two playgrounds, extensive grass areas, a wildlife area, greenhouse and gardens and two large adventure playgrounds, and numerous trees.  We also now have the Bursley dome - which is in the process of being built and fitted out at present.

The school prides itself on high academic standards and a caring ethos. It was identified in its last Ofsted report in 2007 as a very good school and KS2 SATs results consistently place it near the top of the league tables. The school is the lead school in a Primary Network catering for the most able and talented children in the area, and is included in the governments ‘Sustaining Success in Schools project.

Government initiatives have been fully implemented and are carefully monitored. All members of the teaching team take responsibility for one or two areas of the curriculum. Staff meetings take place once a week.

We have very active PTA members who assist the school by raising funds, and supporting practical activities in the classroom. Parents are made very welcome and invited to attend many school activities, including class assemblies, concerts, pantomimes, curriculum presentations, open nights and sporting events.

Extra Curricular activities are encouraged and various clubs help to enrich the learning opportunities for the children. They currently include football, cricket, cross-country, netball, computers, craft, choir, French, guitars, and gardening. Residential visits to outdoor activity centres are an annual event and the vast majority of Y6 children take the opportunity on offer.

The Governors take an active interest in all aspects of the school and are keen to cultivate a friendly and supportive environment.
