Modern Foreign Languages at Our School

At Bursley Academy, we aim to encourage a wider understanding of the world, inspiring a lifelong love and interest in modern foreign languages. Spanish is our chosen modern foreign language because it is the most widely spoken language globally after English. It is also the language our children are most likely to encounter when travelling abroad to Spanish-speaking countries. Furthermore, learning Spanish supports smooth progression into Key Stage 3, as it is the chosen language of our main feeder school within our Trust.

Our MFL curriculum is carefully designed to progressively develop children’s language skills through regular lessons and consistent recap sessions. Children acquire, use, and apply an expanding bank of vocabulary, grammar, and phonics knowledge across the four key areas of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing. We incorporate rhymes, stories and interactive activities to help embed vocabulary and improve recall and use original resources to inspire the children’s love of languages. This approach makes language learning both enjoyable and relevant to children’s lives, helping them to know more and remember more.

We began our whole-school Spanish learning journey in September 2025, with all children starting from Unit 1.

From September 2026, the progression will be as follows:

  • Year 3 – Start Spanish with Unit 1

  • Years 4, 5 and 6 – Continue with Unit 4

This structured and consistent progression ensures that by the end of Key Stage 2, all children have a solid foundation in Spanish, preparing them well for their continued language studies in secondary school.
